August – Mountaineering in
Slovenia
Throughout the year, Slovenia’s mountain world offers
splendour for the spirit, and an abundance of activities; its
seven thousand kilometres of marked and protected trails and 165
mountain lodges attract hikers, climbers and other nature lovers.
The whole country is a network of trails and footpaths of
varying difficulty.
There is something for everyone who loves nature: high,
snow-capped peaks, green valleys, steep or gently sloping paths,
populated or isolated places, surrounded by vineyards or mighty
rock walls. Unspoilt nature, a rich heritage and abundant
diversity, provide a splendid backdrop for wandering around
Slovenia.
Getting out into nature, particularly in the mountains, is a
favourite national pastime. The countless mountain trails make
mountaineering a very popular sport. At the plentiful huts and
cottages along these paths, travellers can find a roof over
their head and enjoy a hearty meal.

Why not choose the herdsmen’s
settlement on Velika Planina. It is known as one of few the
settlements of such size in Europe and attracts many visitors
throughout the year. It is distinct by its typical architecture;
the roofs are covered with pine shingles, which extend rather
low.
The settlement is revived every June, when herdsmen return to
the settlement and tend to their cattle until September. They
are delighted to invite you to taste their dairy products or try
a typical herdsmen’s lunch: sour milk and hard-boiled corn mush. |

Wheat reapers
In the past, wheat reaping was a kind of festivity in
Slovenia. In some remote places, women still gather together and
reap the wheat in the old-fashioned way – with sickles. The
village rejoices and all people prepare festivity meals together.
Home-made bread must not miss on loaded tables.
