Targoviste

TÂRGOVIŞTE is the capital city of the Dâmboviţa county, Romania. It is situated on the right bank of the Ialomiţa River, at 80 km far from Bucharest, the actual capital city of Romania. There are about 90 000 inhabitants.

First attested in 1396, in the Travel Accounts of Johannes Schiltberger, Targoviste was the capital city of the Wallachian voivodship between 1396 and 1714 when the Royal Court ("Curtea Domnească") and the Chindia Tower (“Turnul Chindia”), now the symbol of the city, were built.

It is known as “The city of 33 voivods” as there were 33 princes who ruled the whole country from Târgovişte when it was the capital city. Among them we can mention Vlad Ţepeş (known as Dracula from the horror novel “Dracula” written by the Irish novelist Bram Stoker). Chindia Tower was added to the Royal Court during the regime of Vlad Ţepeş.
